Video - Flamenco guitar

As promised, here is a comparison - albeit not a very apples for apples comparison - of video shot using the Blue Microphone's "Mikey", attached to an iPhone 5. Noticeable improvement in sound quality.

This is my original composition "Incantation":

Paloma Negra, YouTube videos

In gearing up for my show tomorrow at The Terrace Room with Paloma Negra, I realize how much of my output in recent years is unrecorded, undocumented. So I'm finally getting around to recording and filming things. A friend recently gave me something called "Mikey". It's a quality microphone you attach to a smart phone, made by Blue Microphones, and the results are pretty good.

Here's something done straight to iPhone:

Comparison audio with Mikey coming soon..

Oh - that Paloma Negra show?

Back from Brazil Camp

Sept 2014 - Having just returned from 2 weeks of teaching and playing with some of my favorite Brazilian musicians in the Russian River paradise of Cazadero, I'm feeling recharged and ready for the end of the year.

California Brazil Camp is hands down the best thing for Brazilian music since..well.. Brazil. If you've never been, I can't recommend it enough. Once upon a time, I had my doubts.  (".. Camp?? For adults?.."). But I'm a convert. Who wouldn't want to be imersed in incredible music, surrounded by virtuosic world class Brazilian music experts situated in an old growth redwood forest?

As for shows, check out my Shows page to find out what's going on. There are some great shows coming up, with various facets of Latin guitar represented (Spain, Brazil, Venezuela, etc).

Falso Baiano rocks SFJazz!

Falso Baiano performed Sat Aug 3 at SFJazz as part of a triple bill with Jovino Santos Neto-Paul Taub duo, and Grupo Samba Rio. It was an amazing show, and we're excited to say we'll be performing for SFJazz again this month at Stanford Shopping Ctr on Aug 15. Free summer show!

We also just booked a show at the Paragon Bar at the Claremont Hotel on Aug 30.

Other Aug shows include flamenco-brazilian project Paloma Negra at Bubble Lounge SF (Aug 9) and Aug 14 will feature vocalist Sandy Cressman at The Cigar Bar in San Francisco for an evening of Brazilian jazz and samba - and a little choro too!

Summer shows

I'm excited to say I'll be performing in the Fillmore Jazz Festival with vocalist Renee Wilson

There are also a few more SF shows coming up at Cigar Bar and BubbleLounge. Details on the Shows page.

Meanwhile, Falso Baiano is gearing up to begin recording our 3rd cd! Good things coming..

Falso Baiano awarded grant for next record!

Hello friends - I'm excited to announce that the brazilian choro music project that I have co-led for almost 10 years, has been awarded our second grant from the SF Friends of Chamber Music. The grant will go towards our next record, due out in 2014. In the mean time, we continue to perform concerts and assemblies throughout CA, including a great run of shows recently in Fresno. Check out our Facebook page for pics and details.. and "Like Us" too!

In other news, I've been performing more with Paloma Negra and doing sideman work with singer Renee Wilson and brazilian samba-pagode group "Grupo da Sete". Performance dates can be found on the "Shows" page.

StrumSchool, Concerts..

For anyone who has though of online guitar lessons, I'd encourage you to check out StrumSchool. It's a new venture I've been a part of for over 5 years, and it's evolved from pre recorded guitar lessons to a full blow live guitar lessons site with a roster of talented teachers.

In other news, I'm excited to announce a series of shows with Grupo Falso Baiano. We are featuring 3 wonderful vocalists on 3 consective Thurdays in April 2013. Check out the Falso Baiano page, but we are blessed to have some incredible talent visiting from out of town and have been able to steal them for a night - that would be France's Lanna, and Chicago's Silvia Manrique. And we're also featuring the Bay Area's own Sarah Cabral, a wonderful Brazilian vocalist.

Thanks for checking out my site.

here comes Brazil Camp!

Every year, a magical conference of sorts occurs in the CA Redwoods. California Brazil Camp is a truly special experience and very recommended for anyone interested in Brazilian music. Dates are Aug 19 - Sept 1, and the faculty is largely imported from Brazil and are among some of the bigger names in Brazilian music, among them Airto, Guinga, Moyseis Marques, Chico Pinheiro, Arismar do Espirto Santos, Alessandro Penezzi, Alexendre Ribeiro, and many many more.

To boot, there are often some great concerts surrounding the camp, and I'm honored and excited to say I'll be part of one, on Fri Aug 17 at the De Young Museum in SF. Details are on the "Shows" page here. Oh - and it's free!!  Hope to see you out there!

New website!

After many many years, I've decided to revamp the website. I hope you like it! Joe Chellman at ShooFly Design did all the heavy lifting. The photos were taken by many wonderful photographers, among them Lisa Lefkowitz, Jose Villa, Ryu Kodama,  and Ryosuke Matsumoto.

Next: update the music samples! Stay tuned

End of Year News

The year is ending with some great news. I've been asked to teach Brazilian and Latin guitar at JazzCamp West in 2012, and I was recently nominated as a Latin Jazz Guitarist of the Year at Latin Jazz Corner, a blog dedicated to - you guessed it - Latin Jazz. 2012 is shaping up with some nice bookings as well. Grupo Falso Baiano will be doing a few concerts in Jan at the JazzSchool and Yoshi's SF. Best wishes to everyone for a happy healthy and prosperous 2012!
